Mardi Himal Trek: A Trekker’s Paradise

Mardi Himal Trek is a recently opened and lesser-known trek in the Annapurna region of Nepal, which offers a unique and adventurous experience to trekkers. The trek provides stunning views of the Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli peaks. The highlight of this trek is undoubtedly the magnificent view of Mardi Himal from Ubho Kharka, which is located at an altitude of 4600 meters.

The trek starts from Kande, which is about 45 minutes drive from Pokhara. From Kande, the trail winds through lush forests, traditional villages, and terraced fields. The trek is relatively easy until you reach Forest Camp, where the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. However, the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valleys make the climb worth it.

The trail continues through dense rhododendron forests, where you can spot several species of birds such as the Himalayan Monal, the Satyr Tragopan, and the Blood Pheasant. You may also encounter some wild animals such as Himalayan Thar, Musk Deer, Yaks, shepherds and occasionally even Snow Leopard if you are lucky.

After crossing Forest Camp, the trail leads to Low Camp and then to High Camp, which is located at an altitude of 3580 meters. From High Camp, you can witness the breathtaking views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). The final climb to the viewpoint at Ubho Kharka is a challenging but rewarding experience, as it offers an unobstructed view of Mardi Himal’s majestic peak.

The trek is a perfect blend of adventure and nature, with its stunning views, diverse flora and fauna, and unique cultural experiences. The trek offers an opportunity to interact with the locals and learn about their cultures of ancient Bon, beliefs, stories, animal husbandry lifestyle, farming, working as an army in Nepal, India and British Army, now in Tourism and their fabulous traditions.

In conclusion, Mardi Himal Trek is a must-do for trekkers who want to experience a less-crowded and off-the-beaten-path trekking experience in Nepal. The trek provides a chance to explore the wilderness, observe rare birds and wild animals, and witness the beauty of the Himalayas up close. So, pack your bags and head out to the mountains for an adventure of a lifetime.

Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi-High-Camp

Situated just south of one of the most popular mountain of Nepal, Machhapuchhre, the Mardi Himal trek officially opened in 2012 and is still pristine. Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem. It is an ideal choice for those who are looking for ‘off the beaten path’. Few trekkers make their way to the Mardi Himal Base Camp spectacularly situated at the base of Mardi Himal and the impressive Machapuchhre.

The trek goes beaten trails of shepherds and Yak herders as it still provides summer grazing. The trail goes along with interesting villages, terraced farms with verdant forests, small winding paths, through magical rhododendron forests until you climb out of the forest at an elevation around 3,300 m. As the trail mostly stays along the ridge, the altitude gain becomes more gradual. The landscape changes quite abruptly into a rugged high mountain landscape, with amazing views of Mardi Himal, Machapuchre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli.

From High Camp (36000 m) you can climb up to Mardi Himal Base Camp in about 3-4 hours, which offers spectacular close up views of the entire Annapurna Range includes Annapurna South and Hiuchuli.

There are very basic teahouse lodges and home stays along the entire route.

Another benefit of this trekking route is that the trail makes a small loop so that we don’t need to backtrack over the same terrain.

Trek Grade: This trek is grade 3 most of the way as you are walking typically 5-6 hours along good trails up to 3500m. However, there are a couple of days that are a little more challenging when you go to Mardi Base Camp 4250m.
